Well, the summer’s end is near. Kids throughout the country are getting pumped for the new academic year, with brand new bags, new books and of course, plenty of energy and excitement. And if you haven’t already done so, it’s also the perfect time to bring your child in to the eye doctor for an eye exam. Proper vision is central to doing well at school and as your son or daughter grows, there are several developmental stages that may result in his or her eyesight.
As you might have guessed, a lot of progress at school is accomplished through the use of a child’s eyes. Yet interestingly, in spite of this overt correlation between sight and learning, a lot of parents don’t realize how profoundly vision problems affect education, and as a result, don’t get their child’s eyes checked often enough. It’s important to know that because vision in kids changes, regular eye and vision care is central to doing well in at school.
Kids, it’s worth noting, have the amazing ability to carry on, despite having a vision problem. As children go through school, it becomes extra important to keep tabs on their vision. Telltale signs may include reversing numbers or letters, frequently watering eyes, eye rubbing, squinting, avoiding small print, and head tilting.
Struggling to meet the visual demands of schoolwork may noticeably affect their academic performance. New technology brought into the classroom, like interactive whiteboards, can sometimes exaggerate less obvious vision problems. When a student doesn’t have good enough vision, it isn’t just their academic life that suffers. It’s mentally and emotionally tough on them too.
If your son or daughter has already been fitted for glasses, now is also a good opportunity to reassess the suitability of his or her current frames and maybe even purchase new glasses for your child for the new school year.
